How did 420 start?

Folks are curious about what 420 means, but not a lot know its true origin. Believe it or not, it started with a bunch of high school students.

In 1971, a group of students at San Rafael High School called themselves the Waldos. Mark, Steve, Dave, Jeff, and Larry picked the name because they hung out near a wall.

They heard rumors of an abandoned cannabis crop near the Coast Guard Station. The Waldos wanted to use the crop, so they decided to find and harvest it.

From then on, the boys would meet at 4:20 in front of the statue of Louis Pasteur. Then, they would prepare for their search for the missing cannabis as they smoke pot.

When they meet on the grounds of San Rafael, they called their operation “4:20 Louis.” As time went by, they called it “4:20” instead.

The Waldoes never found the cannabis crop. They spent a long time driving around and smoking pot while looking for it, though. Now you know what 420 means!

It didn’t stop there. The rock band Grateful Dead moved to San Rafael, California. The band hung out with the Waldos and picked up 420 as slang for smoking marijuana.

In 1991, the High Times magazine had flyers that featured 420. After, it started mentioning the term 420 in reports. In 2005, it suggested moving 4:20 to 5:20 since “it’s worth the extra hour.”
