Factors that Determine the Density of a City’s Population

Factors that Determine the Density of a City's Population

Many factors determine the density of a city’s population.

Those factors include more births than deaths, people moving to cities for jobs, or they have been forced off of rural land by natural causes, land prices going up, and more.

Population density is determined by the number of people living within a certain land area. This is usually a mile or so. In 2016, 55% of the world’s population lived in urban areas.

By 2030, this number will be 65%, with one in three people living in cosmopolitan areas with at least 500,000 residents.

What deems a city to be populated?

A city being populated is easy to happen. Population growth determines that as well. If fewer deaths and more births, the per person per square foot will increase as time passes.

In the United States alone, the urban population share has increased 5% to more than 80% since 1790. The number of residents living in urban areas has gone past 80%. This is the first time that this has occurred.

The least most densely populated city typically is in the least densely populated states.

How Data is found

The data for this list is directly from the United States Census Bureau. The Census Bureau put out an article about this very topic. Ten U.S. cities have one million people or more living there now.

The Bureau had estimated some numbers before the census is taken. However, when the numbers came back, they had an official word of these ten cities.

These statistics cover all of the local government units. This includes incorporated areas, such as towns and cities, little civil divisions, and cities consolidated.

There is a population clock on the Census Bureau’s website that constantly displays updated United States population estimates. This includes the rate of births, deaths, and net migration for the whole United States.

These estimates are based upon a monthly time series of population projections starting with April 1, 2010. The resident population count was gotten from the 2010 census.

The U.S. Census Bureau app can show you the top 25 U.S. cities and towns if you want more information on a specific city.

The app is called dwellr, and it gives information about neighborhoods, schools in the area, home values, and how people get to work.
