MOOSOMIN, Saskatchewan – Moosomin’s annual fireworks competition, traditionally a showdown between two prairie provinces, brought international flair to local skies this year. Canada faced off with the Philippines, with the Philippines taking home the trophy.
There were 13,000 people at this year’s Living Skies Fireworks. The high turnout is quite the feat for a town with a population of just 2,500. The two-day event on Aug. 3 and 4 featured a pyrotechnic battle.
Money raised from the paid admissions will go toward Moosomin’s Water Treatment plant which was built to meet water quality safety standards.
“Representing my country of adoption and the country of my daughter and the country of my wife, this is a very special show for me,” Patrice Guy, representing the Philippines, told CTV News Regina. “We went all out to impress the crowd.”
It’s more than just a fireworks spectacle. It’s also a way to honor the Filipino culture, an integral part of the Moosomin community.
“We’re trying to bring the Filipino culture to the community of Moosomin, who have been really welcoming, who have been a good host to us,” event coordinator Leo Ilustrisimo told CTV News.
The event also featured activities throughout the day and a Filipino cultural experience for residents and visitors.
