Olivia Rodrigo backs Kamala Harris for 2024 presidential race
Women supporting women, Filipino American pop star Olivia Rodrigo has joined the ranks of celebrities endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for her 2024 US presidential bid.
The Grammy-award-winning singer-songwriter showed her support on July 23 through an Instagram Story (now expired), sharing a TikTok video from @thenewsmovement that featured Harris’ speech at her initial campaign rally in West Allis, Wisconsin.
A stance Rodrigo emphasized with praise hands emojis, Harris criticizes former President Donald Trump’s abortion policies and advocates for reproductive rights in the said video.
“And we who believe in reproductive freedom will stop Donald Trump’s extreme abortion bans because we trust women to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do,” says Harris in the video. “And when Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms as president of the United States, I will sign it into law.”
The “Driver’s License” hitmaker’s support for reproductive rights is not new. During her “Guts” world tour stop in Missouri, a state with stringent abortion laws, the 21-year-old singer and her team distributed emergency contraceptives at St. Louis’ Enterprise Center.
They also collaborated with local advocacy groups to provide free emergency contraceptive pills and condoms to concertgoers.
Earlier this year, the Fil-Am artist launched her “Fund 4 Good” initiative, which supports girls’ education, reproductive rights and the prevention of gender-based violence by funding community-based non-profits.
As an influential figure, her proactive stance on these issues highlights her commitment to championing women’s rights and empowerment.
In 2022, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Rodrigo joined forces with Lily Allen for a powerful performance of “F*** You” at the Glastonbury Music Festival, reaffirming her dedication to the cause.
Rodrigo’s endorsement adds to the growing list of musicians supporting Harris. The vice president is now running for the Democratic presidential nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris on July 21.
