Filipino American track and field athlete, Lauren Hoffman, sprinted her way to Philippine athletics history as she broke the national record in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Surpassing a record that stood for 17 years, Hoffman’s feat eclipsed the previous mark set by Sheena Atilano in Pune, India. Despite finishing second in the tournament, with American athlete Skyla Wilson clocking in at 13.36 seconds, the Fil-Am’s display of speed and skill reaffirmed her status as one of the Philippines’ brightest athletics prospects.

This triumph follows closely on the heels of her recent record-setting performance in the 400m hurdles at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida. There, she shattered the previous record of 56.44 seconds set by Robyn Brown, crossing the line in 56.39 seconds.

Hoffman’s performance not only secured her place but also marked a breakthrough on the international athletics stage. The Duke Invitational served as a platform for Hoffman’s pursuit of securing a spot at the upcoming Paris Games, scheduled for July this year.

Although Hoffman remains some distance away from the Olympic standards in the 100m hurdles (12.77), 400m hurdles (54.85), and 400m (50.95), her unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of excellence underscore her commitment to representing the Philippines on the world stage.

In an Instagram post after the 400m hurdle win, the 25-year-old hurdler shared, “400 opener and a PHI National Record (pending ratification). My teammates and I intend to make that record even faster. But I’m still gonna celebrate this achievement for now! All season long I’ll be celebrating small wins, big wins, and everything in between.”

With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, the nation eagerly anticipates witnessing Hoffman’s continued brilliance as she strives to make her mark on the grandest stage of them all.
