Wanted: Storytelling participants in Michigan
The Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) is looking for Asian Pacific American families with immigrant parents and youth between the ages of 16 and 26 to participate in a project that aims to connect generations through storytelling.
Funded with a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council (MHC), CAPA’s new project calls for the collection of stories about migration and assimilation.
CAPA President Aneesa Rashid said that by interviewing children and parents of immigrant families and recording and writing their stories, “we are bringing together generations to share their experiences of growing up and blending customs and traditions of their home country with life in America.”
The parents and children are urged to get involved by:
Sharing your story in a one-on-one recorded interview; hosting a group storytelling session at a cultural or religious center in your community; and hosting five to 10 families at your home to share their stories.
Rashid said, “You provide the venue and people; we’ll bring the food.”
For further information, Asian Pacific Americans who want to participate in the project are asked to contact Harsha Nahata at [email protected] or call 248-825-6696.
