Filipino American educators in Washington State recently had their well-deserved moment in the spotlight as the House of Representatives approved a resolution recognizing their contributions across the state.
Spearheaded by Rep. Deb Manjarrez (R-Wapato), House Resolution 4644 highlights the educators’ significant roles in shaping minds and enriching the state’s diversity.
The resolution also honors the Fil-Am educators for being a cornerstone of Washington’s growing Filipino American community, now numbering 185,000.
“We are blessed and honored to have Filipino American educators working in our schools, living in our neighborhoods, and sharing their rich culture, history and heritage throughout our state,” Manjarrez said in a press release.
“Washington is scattered with cities and towns rich with Filipino American history, including my hometown of Wapato,” she added. “Filipino American educators have made lasting contributions to our schools, including the arts, literature and business. They are very deserving of this resolution.”

The resolution cites the Fil-Am community’s “substantial and valuable contributions to the heritage, diversity, education, culture, traditions and economic prosperity” of the state.
A day after the resolution was passed on March 25, a delegation of Fil-Am educators gathered at the state Capitol to receive official copies of the resolution recognizing their commitment to students and communities.
Fil-Am educators throughout the US have been making their mark, not just as educators but also as community leaders.
In January, Deirdre Levy – a Fil-Am educator, community organizer and advocate – made history as the first Filipina to run for New York City mayor.
In 2023, Mark Munoz, a professor at Millikin University’s Tabor School of Business, was awarded the Academy of Global Business Advancement (AGBA) Lifetime Achievement Award in Global Business.
