NEW YORK — While we often hear stories of nurses receiving accolades, few highlight the vital role of nurse recruiters, especially a Filipino nurse recruiter like Jocelyn Musni.

Recently, Musni, a chief clinical officer and partner at Alere Care Solutions – a women-owned minority business – received the prestigious TruMerit DAISY Award for 2025 Outstanding International Nurse Recruiter from the TruMerit/Daisy Foundation. She traveled from Virginia Beach to accept the award on March 17.

The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, honors nurses for their clinical expertise and compassionate care, making it one of the highest recognitions in the field, second only to the Florence Nightingale Award. For Musni, receiving this honor marks a significant moment in her career, both personally and professionally.

Musni’s achievements highlight the broader contributions of Filipino nurses to the US healthcare system.

“Filipino nurses have been the backbone of US healthcare for decades. We bring not just skill, but also compassion, resilience and a deep commitment to patient care,” she said. Her award serves as a tribute to every Filipino nurse who has worked tirelessly to make a difference in their communities.

The demand for Filipino nurses in the US is driven by various factors, as Musni explained. “Nursing shortages, our well-trained and highly skilled workforce and a proven track record of excellence make Filipino nurses invaluable.” US employers recognize that hiring Filipino nurses is not just about filling vacancies; it’s about enhancing patient care.

Chosen from 30 nominations, Musni was one of two honored for her dedication to guiding foreign-educated nurses through the complexities of the US healthcare system. The DAISY Award celebrates individuals in international nurse recruitment who significantly impact their field through compassion and ethical practices.

Her approach to recruitment is anchored in fairness and transparency. “Ethical recruitment isn’t just a buzzword for me; it’s the foundation of everything I do,” she said. From ensuring that internationally educated nurses receive equal pay without hidden costs to providing mentorship and long-term support, Musni believes in creating an environment where nurses can thrive.

With over 30 years of extensive experience in the medical and nursing fields, Musni views nursing as a calling deeply rooted in her Filipino heritage. “Growing up in the Philippines, I saw firsthand how Filipino nurses not only provided excellent care but also brought kindness and warmth to their patients,” she recalled. This early observation laid the groundwork for her nursing career, which began when she earned her nursing degree in Chicago. She has worked as a NICU nurse across various hospitals, gaining invaluable experience as a bedside nurse, agency nurse, administrator and clinical leader.

Initially, Musni did not envision herself as a nurse recruiter. “I never set out to become a nurse recruiter, but life has a way of leading you where you’re needed,” she reflected. The challenges posed by nursing shortages and the struggles of talented Filipino nurses seeking opportunities in the U.S. inspired her transition into recruitment.

“Being a recruiter isn’t just about hiring nurses; it’s about ensuring they’re treated fairly and set up for success,” she emphasized, underscoring that her work remains deeply connected to her nursing roots.

While the rewards of being a nurse recruiter are profound, such as witnessing nurses succeed and build their futures, the emotional challenges can be taxing.

“I see the struggles nurses face – the homesickness, the pressure, the sacrifices,” she admitted. Despite these challenges, Musni remains passionate about her role, believing her efforts can significantly impact many lives.

For aspiring nurses, particularly Filipinos seeking to work in the US, Musni offers heartfelt advice. “Be prepared, stay patient and never stop believing in yourself.” She stresses the importance of knowing one’s rights, investing in skills, and finding a supportive community. “Resilience is key. Every challenge you overcome brings you one step closer to your dreams.”

Founded in 1977, TruMerit, formerly CGFNS International, is the largest credentials evaluation organization for nursing and allied health professions, maintaining consultative status with the United Nations.

The DAISY Foundation was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes to recognize the profound impact nurses have on their patients and families across more than 6,500 healthcare facilities worldwide.
