Grammy-award winning pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo made her feelings clear this week when her song “Deja Vu” was used in a celebratory TikTok video by Team Trump.

The video, posted as Donald Trump appeared to secure a second term in office, featured Rodrigo’s hit track, but the singer was not amused by the use of her music.

It was a moment of triumph for the Trump campaign, but it quickly sparked backlash from Rodrigo’s camp.

A vocal supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris and her advocacy for reproductive rights, the singer-songwriter had no qualms about calling out Team Trump.

Her stance on reproductive rights has been a central part of her public persona, especially in light of Harris’ criticisms of Trump’s past policies on abortion.

Rodrigo, who has used her platform to amplify progressive causes, was not pleased to see her music being used to celebrate the opposite political ideology.

In response, the singer made it clear that she did not authorize the use of her song and has since requested its removal from the video.

Her fans, who have long admired her commitment to speaking out on social issues, rallied behind her, applauding her for standing up for her beliefs.

People on the internet shared that the singer’s reaction to the unauthorized use of her song highlights the ongoing intersection between music, politics and social media, where artists are increasingly taking a more active role in controlling how their work is used.

As the debate over the use of copyrighted material in political campaigns continues, they added that Rodrigo’s stance sends a message about the power of musicians in shaping the narratives surrounding their art.
