Gina Apostol is University of Hawai’i’s spring 2024 Inouye chair
Gina Apostol is arguably among the most well-known Filipino novelists today. Her vast body of work, including the critically acclaimed “Insurrecto,” just proves her global prowess.
In 2022, Apostol also won the Rome Prize for Literature, just to name a few of her nods and accomplishments.
Now, the celebrated Fil-Am author adds another achievement to her arsenal. Recently, she’s been announced as the Inouye Chair for Democratic Ideals at the University of Hawai’i in Manoa for the spring 2024 semester, which she confirmed on her official website.
The Inouye Chair program was established in 2005 that allows prominent figures such as artists, scholars, and public figures to come to Hawaii and share their expertise, especially about democratic ideals and civic engagement.
In an article by the UH on their website, UH Manoa College of Arts, Languages and Letters dean Peter Arnade shares the opportunity Apostol’s residency will bring to the university and how it honors the legacy of Dan and Maggie Inouye.
During her residence, Apostol will be handling the semester’s American studies graduate research seminar on the topic “Narration and Nation.” The “La Tercera” author will also be hosting free events that are not only open to the students and faculty but also to the interested public.
