Kaumana Cave in Hawaii reopens after Sept 2023 closure
On Sept. 23, 2023, activities within Kaumana Cave in Hilo, Hawaii came to a temporary halt when a fairly large rock dropped from the cave’s ceiling, prompting the county to close the popular tourist destination.
Now, after nearly four months of intensive work and repairs aimed at ensuring the safety of the area, Mayor Mitch Roth has officially announced the reopening on Jan. 16, expressing excitement to welcome visitors back to this natural wonder.
“The safety of all in our community, including our cave explorers, is our top priority,” Mayor Roth emphasized in a press release shared by Hawaii News Now. “After a thorough assessment of the site with local experts, we are confident it is safe to reopen the caves for visitors to enjoy.”
Roth attributed the successful reopening to the collaborative efforts of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and the local parks department.
The combined efforts encompassed geological assessments, structural reinforcements, and meticulous restoration work, all aimed at preserving the natural integrity of the caves.
Meanwhile, the Department of Parks and Recreation, recognizing the anticipation surrounding the reopening, has outlined plans to heighten visitor awareness. This will be achieved through the installation of new signage, serving as a constant reminder of the inherent risks associated with entering the caves while providing information on how to explore them safely.
