Passionate foodie or not, the Filipino Migrant Center (FMC) is cooking up something for California’s Fil-Am communities that will surely be the talk of the town.

Join the fun as Long Beach-based nonprofit FMC turns 13 just in time for Filipino American History Month. Called “Kwento Natin: Raise our Voices and Fight for Change,” the meaningful and flavor-filled celebration is slated on Oct. 14, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at El Dorado Park West in Long Beach.

The main highlight of this grand fiesta? A vegan adobo cookoff from many talented cooks who are keen on sharing their versions of adobo. Ralph Degala, the culinary maestro from MasterChef Season 9, will be the judge for the night.

Beyond adobo are the inspiring stories

But beyond the sumptuous showdown, “Kwento Natin: Raise our Voices and Fight for Change” is also about heartwarming stories that inspire change. Stories of Nerissa Roque and Nikki Arriola, brave survivors of anti-Asian hate crimes, will be celebrated, too.

The program will also feature community performances and a celebration of FMC’s triumphs after its epic year.

The nonprofit premiered the documentary “Liwanag,” (Light), which fueled and inspired people to share #KwentoKo (my story) and join the battle on ending wage theft and anti-Asian hate, and championing workplace safety for domestic workers.

General admission is $50 but seniors, students, and kids will get discounted rates. Deadline for ticket purchase is on Oct. 12.

Adding to the list of positives in this event, FMC will also be holding a fundraiser for their services and programs, including its newest venture, Emergency Services Fund, which is created for community members with low income, victims of domestic violence and anti-Asian hate crime, and those who are in need of food and shelter.
