McDonald’s Twitter joke to Elon Musk inadvertently created a new cryptocurrency

/ 10:46 AM January 27, 2022

A Twitter banter between the two giants, Tesla’s Elon Musk and McDonald’s has ignited the emergence of a new cryptocurrency called Grimace Coin. While it’s not a secret that Elon’s tweets always spark the Twitter world on fire, his recent tweets are one of those.

In addition, Elon Musk even tweeted jokingly that he would eat a Happy Meal on TV if McDonald’s accepted Dogecoin. The made-up cryptocurrency that McDonald’s posted was the blob-like purple character. It’s part of the McDonald’s family character that also shows up in their commercials.

An avid Dogecoin supporter Elon Musk tweeted on January 25 in response to a McDonald’s tweet. Musk asked the fast-food chain giant to accept DOGE as payment. McDonald’s answered by saying that they would accept Dogecoin if Tesla would also accept “Grimacecoin.”Though this is a non-existent cryptocurrency when McDonald’s responded.

Even with McDonald’s response about the Grimacecoin, the cryptocurrency masters are quick to make a move. As they know opportunities when they see one.

Not surprisingly, just a few hours after the tweet exchange between Elon Musk and McDonald’s, crypto trading under the name Grimacecoin started. Just shortly, almost 10 Grimacecoins already appeared on the Binance Smart Chain Network. This is according to CoinDesk.

One of the Grimace Coins had even built up a decent and professional-looking website. This is just within 24 hrs after McDonald’s initial tweet.

A monitoring tool for token activity Dex Screener said that most of the Grimace Coin tokens are trading. Some of the networks include Polygon, Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Fantom, and Avalanche.

The Surge

After a few hours, people from different parts of the world also started creating fake Grimace tokens on the marketplace. However, it’s quite notable that there wasn’t an existing Grimace Coin in the crypto world when McDonald’s tweeted about it. While the fast-food chain is clearly joking, others capitalize on the trend and create a coin.

If the Grimace Coin purchasing persisted, its price could rise quickly. However, there’s also the risk that the price can drop drastically from time to time. Although the huge price increase can still let the token’s creator earn hundreds or thousands of dollars.

IN 2013, Dogecoin started similarly. It was based on a doge meme that also started a hype. According to CoinMarketCap, even if Dogeoin is now one of the top cryptocurrencies by market value, it’s not a guarantee that meme coins always end up as a secure investment.

Moreover, a McDonald spokesperson said that McDonald’s is not officially affiliated with any of the newborn Grimace Coin currency.
