Best electric vehicles (EV) coming this year
The EV industry is growing, and the best electric vehicles of 2022 prove it. However, it isn’t content with just expanding, but innovating too. That’s why my list will show you some of the unique entries of 2022! I will give you a list of my best picks and share a few details about them.
The three vehicles I will discuss have unique features that set them apart from the rest. The first allows you to change your paint job on the fly, while the last wants to develop the most advanced self-driving features you’d expect from a brand you’d least expect!
I’ll start with my recommendations for the best electric cars of 2022. Note that the details may change over time due to several factors. If you’re not a car enthusiast, though, stick around as I will explain how electric vehicles work. I’ll also talk about the benefits of having one, so you can decide if you should buy one:

When people talk about electric vehicles, they usually talk about the usual Tesla models. That’s why one of my top picks has a unique feature: color-changing paint!
You might have seen the concept if you watched the 2002 film Minority Report. The movie featured the bad guys riding in a Lexus 2054 that changed colors based on the driver’s mood.
That’s also how the German automobile company promoted the BMW iX Flow and its color-changing feature at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022.
According to the BMW web page, the iX Flow is laminated with a special film with microcapsules that color the vehicle when an electric field courses through it.
Then, the microcapsules color the electric SUV in white, grey, and black. Some people may think it’s a minor feature, but it has surprisingly great benefits.
A 2011 Berkeley Lab study found that using white paint raises fuel economy by 2, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 1.9%, and lowers other emissions by around 1%.
This is because white reflects 60% sunlight, which leaves less heat in the car. As a result, it reduces the need for air conditioning.
Based on this data, you might want to have a black car during a snowy season based on this data. It may help you keep warm inside, and you’ll be much easier to see against the all-white environment.
With the BMW iX Flow’s color-changing feature, you can take advantage of having a white and black car whenever you want. Expect this electric pickup in the US by late 2022 starting at $84,195.

When you think of EVs, a Prius or Tesla comes to mind. An electric vehicle is usually a sedan you take to work. But what if it could do so much more?
That’s the goal of the Los Angeles-based EV company Canoo. Its flagship entry is the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle, and it’s great for your family and friends.
Its back seat has lounge seating, so your friends or relatives can sit facing each other and chill. Of course, the Lifestyle Vehicle provides safety with its Drive-by-Wire system and cabin with 12 airbags.
Upgrade yours to a Premium, and you get additional features like a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, street view, and an Air Purifying Wellness Package.
Moreover, you could purchase the LIfestyle Vehicle’s Adventure version to get a roof rack and light bar. It boasts a tow hitch with a 2,000 lb capacity and an exclusive dark green color.
What’s more, it looks like the Tesla Cybertruck’s less edgy cousin. At the time of writing, its production date has been postponed until further notice.
If you can’t wait for Elon Musk’s pickup truck, you might want to get a Canoo Lifestyle vehicle instead. This electric vehicle will come out by late 2022, starting at $34,750.

Yes, you’re reading this entry right. The company that gave us the Playstation 5 is coming to a new entry in the EV market! The Japanese tech firm has been planning this for a long time.
On November 26, 2021, Forbes reported that Japan approved $6.8 billion to boost its semiconductor chip industry. Then, Sony followed up with a related announcement this year.
On January 4, 2022, the tech firm announced in CES 2022 that it would launch an EV company named Sony Mobility Inc. That’s also when it unveiled its electric vehicle prototype Vision-S 02.
Computer chips are now an important part of everyday items. Most people assume they’re just in laptops and PCs, but they’re also vital for cars, especially EVs.
The Asian country knows this, so it was about time to produce chips by itself. This would also help Sony’s goal of entering the EV market. What makes its EV special?
Sony wants the Vision-S 02 to achieve Level 4 self-driving capability. Most of what we have now only had Level 2, which means the driver must stay alert while the car moves.
According to the NHTSA, Level 4 means the car would move on its own, most of the time without a driver’s help. This means you can play games on it while driving!
Its entertainment system works with the DualShock 4 controller. If you purchased a Playstation 5, you could plug and play it on the Vision-S 02 screen.
We will likely see Sony’s electric vehicle this year. It hasn’t been released a price for it yet, but the Sony Vision-S 02 is one of the best electric vehicles to look forward to for 2022!
How do electric vehicles work?
If you’re not a motorhead, you might not even know how EVs work. Based on the name, it’s easy to think that they only need electricity to function.
This depends on the type you have. The first electric vehicle was a hybrid from the 1990s. Austrian coachbuilder Jacob Lohner wanted a quieter version of the diesel car back then.
That’s why he and Ferdinand Porche made one that has an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Today, we have many types of EVs, such as:
- Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) rely only on an electric motor. Many people still prefer hybrids because you can use the petrol engine if the electric one fails. Also, fully electric cars often don’t perform as well as hybrids.
- Series Hybrids let you use either the electric or petrol engine. You can reduce fuel consumption by running only on electricity if you take short trips.
- Parallel Hybrids runs mostly on the petrol engine. These are often the cheapest, but you will likely have to spend more on gas.
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are your Prius and Tesla models. They have a Lithium-ion battery pack that you may refuel at an EV charging station. The latest ones let you plug it at home for fast charging.

For example, I didn’t include a lot of other EVs, such as the 2022 Rivian R1T, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV. They don’t have the unique features of my top picks, but one of them might be a better match for you.
