Kauai Filipino Women’s Club gives 4 scholarships

KAUAI, Hawaii –The Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club and President Barbara Green awarded four $1,000 awards, including a special award to the University of Hawai‘i Foundation, to students wishing to return to school during the Covid-19 medical crisis.

The $1,000 scholarships for each of three graduating women high-school-seniors were awarded in the breezeway between the Lihu‘e Civic Center Mo‘ikeha and Pi‘ikoi buildings, in an outdoor setting compliant with face masks and social distancing regulations.

Mayor Derek Kawakami, Kaua‘i County Council Chair Arryl Kaneshiro, and Councilmembers Mason Chock and Felicia Cowden congratulated the scholarship recipients, Kawakami noted that higher education is independence because it empowers a person to be self-reliant.

Angeline Roslin of Kapa‘a High; Angeline Bangkirig, Kaua‘i High; and Lei‘ohu Chun, Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School, received this year’s KFWC scholarship awards.

Rose Ramos-Benzel, director of development at Kaua‘i Community College, accepted the special award from the club to the University of Hawai‘i Foundation for a student wishing to pursue higher education during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Funds for the KFWC are traditionally earned during the club’s annual Terno Ball which, due to the pandemic, has been put on hold. KFWC members wore fashionable club shirts enhanced by a especially designed fabric face mask to congratulate this year’s scholarship recipients.
