VANCOUVER, BC — Coquitlam, British Columbia-based couple Claire and Jhamel Tabuada were admitted to Royal Columbian Hospital on New Year’s Eve after Claire’s water broke, two weeks before a scheduled C-section.

Having a baby on New Year’s Eve didn’t cross Claire’s mind, according to a CTV News report. Instead, she and husband Jhamel were worried because her previous pregnancy had a sad result — the couple’s son was stillborn at 37 weeks in August 2017.

“My husband, he was panicking. He didn’t know what to do. He was running here and there,” CTV News quotes Claire.

As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Dr. Kathy Jones said she knew it was possible that the Tabuadas would have a New Year baby. Surgery began at around 11:55 p.m., and the baby was born a minute after midnight.

That meant healthy baby girl Tabuada was British Columbia’s first baby of 2020. She weighed in at 4 lbs, 10 oz.
