Facebook Down – Second Outage Since Last Month’s

12:20 AM April 17, 2019

Facebook has released an official apology after a platform outage occurred earlier this Sunday. This affected Instagram and WhatsApp services, along with the Facebook Chat.

Facebook Service Outage

Instagram users were unable to access their main activity feed, while the main Facebook.com domain was unavailable. Further, users of WhatsApp could not send messages. The outages started around 6:30 AM ET, and lasted for around 3 hours. The severity of the service outage differed, where some regions experienced more severe disruption. All of the Facebook services were back live at 9AM ET.

This marks the second Facebook outage since last month’s severe Facebook service disruption. Facebook attributed the outage to a “server configuration change,” as was the case with the last outage. However, the repeat occurrence of this kind of issue for Facebook raises some questions, as the service has recently been experiencing increased political scrutiny as well.

Facebook – A Massive Platform

Is Facebook making changes to the popular platform? Or, are these just standard Facebook maintenance updates as per usual protocol? The massive user base that frequents Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook combined makes for a big deal when the services are unavailable.

A response from a Facebook representative reads, “Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps … The issue has since been resolved; we’re sorry for any inconvenience.”
