Filipina-Canadian is a Conservative candidate for Alberta legislature
EDMONTON, Alberta – A Filipina-Canadian is the United Conservative Party’s candidate for Edmonton- Glenora riding in the coming provincial elections April 16.
The candidate, Marjorie Newman (formerly Marjorie Carmona) is a registered immigration consultant who owns MCN Canada Immigration Consulting Inc. She graduated in mass communication at St. Theresa’s College in Cebu City. Her father was a municipal mayor in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte in Mindanao, according to Philippine Canadian News.
“As a mother and wife, there is no greater gift that we can give our daughter than an Alberta with opportunities where she can achieve prosperity through hard work and sacrifice. We are concerned that the NDP’s misguided policies are pushing jobs and opportunities out of the province and that families are being squeezed by their out-of-touch taxes,” her party’s website states. “I am a small business owner and understand how essential low taxes, less red tape, and government accountability are to creating the free enterprise environment that helps businesses succeed.”
The first Filipino in the Alberta Legislature was Conservative Party member Carl Benito in 2008. Benito served only one term (2008-2012) and did not win a nomination for a second term for Edmonton-Mill Woods. He is now facing charges of immigration fraud.
