The short period spent performing these tricks will allow your computer to function at full speed. This allows some background programs to keep running, using up valuable space on the computer.

Optimizing

This is one of the basic tricks that can be employed to speed up your computer system, and can be done in many different ways. The first essential step is deleting unnecessary files using up space and closing apps that are not being used. The easiest way to do this is by checking the Dock at the bottom of the screen. Programs that are still running will have a dot underneath them. Press Cmd + Tab to bring up the App Switcher, and press tab to scroll through and see which apps are open.

There are a few ways to shut down these apps. Right-click (or ctrl-click) on the icon of the app in the Dock and choose Quit, or better still if you are using the App Switcher, select a program and press Cmd-Q to quit it.

Apart from background apps, there are still some apps that consume power and memory space more-so than the others. These sorts of apps should be avoided as much as possible and, in fact, the used apps should be closed by any of the methods stated above. To know which apps are using up your system resources, open the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder (Or press Cmd-space bar and start to type ‘activity’ and press enter to open it). The activity monitor allows you to see which app you have, and how much space and power they are consuming.

Note: The activity monitor shows all processes, some of these you can’t close, and some you ought not to close, as it can affect your system’s processing.

Lastly, some automated programs that open when your Mac starts up. These programs are known as start up. They limit the speed of your MacBook, due to the memory consumed required for starting up automatically. They are not always needed, and thus shouldn’t be open at all times.

Closing these apps and preventing future start-ups can be done by opening System Preferences and clicking Users & Groups. Now, click on the Login Items tab to view which programs and services are launched when you first power up (or log in) to your Mac.

  1. Backing Up Your Files

Sorting your files like your photos, videos, and music, and backing them up on iTunes, iCloud, and external drives will increase processing efficiency. A lot of space is being consumed by this type of file, and managing them will greatly increase system speed by reducing or completely moving them. As for your music, you can move it onto iTunes Match; you can do this by subscribing to iTunes Match, and moving all of your music into the cloud. From there, you are able to delete it off of your Mac hard drive and access it from any device, directly from the “cloud.”  Once your music is on iTunes Match, you can always download the tracks you want to listen to whenever you want. Other files can be moved to external storage drives as well.

  1. Updating Your Mac Software

Regular checking and software updates will typically result in optimal performance of your system. How you update the software depends on the version of MacOS you’re running.

If your MacOS is a newer version, go to system preferences and click on Software Update to check for updates. If there are any to install, you can do so here. If you are running an older version of the Mac OS, click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose Software Update, if it’s there. You can also try searching App Store > Updates otherwise.

The good thing about the way that software updates work is that you can see all the apps that needed updating at the same time as finding out if there was an update to MacOS that you needed to install.
