“There is no BTS without ARMY and no ARMY without BTS.”
Fandoms from years past are a far cry from what they have become today, especially in the world of K-pop, where consumer culture thrives through concerts, lightsticks, physical albums, expensive photocards and official merchandise.

These fan-driven movements no longer just influence one region as they greatly resonate around the world. A prime example are the ARMYs, the passionate fandom behind global superstars BTS. And this cultural phenomenon takes center stage in the new documentary “Forever We Are Young,” directed by UC San Diego professor Patty Ahn and acclaimed filmmaker Grace Lee.

They further expressed, “We’re excited for audiences to go on an emotional journey and meet a fandom that made us laugh, cry and think.”

Premiering earlier this year at the “2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival” in Austin, Texas, “Forever We Are Young” offers a unique lens into the world of ARMY, not just as fans, but as a dynamic and diverse global force.
The documentary was featured in the “24 Beats Per Second” section, which spotlights impactful music documentaries.

What does it mean to be more than just a fan? “Forever We Are Young” answers this by taking viewers on a three-year journey across Seoul, Los Angeles, Lewisville (Texas) and Mexico City.
Rather than centering on flashy performances or merchandise, the documentary digs deeper, revealing how BTS’s ARMY is not just a fandom but a movement driven by love, social consciousness and a sense of community.
Lee further highlighted the impact of ARMY by pointing out how individuals from various backgrounds unite under a shared identity, connecting through BTS’ music, learning their choreography and supporting one another.
She noted that the film showcases not only this diversity but also the values and strength found in their collective spirit.
The film is set for a limited theatrical release in the US and internationally starting July 30.
