Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala is taking a strategic pause on her road to the Grand Slam stage.

Eala is setting her sights on a breakthrough moment as she gears up for her maiden main draw appearance at the US Open later this month.

The 20-year-old Filipina, currently ranked world no. 68, has decided to skip the Monterrey Open in Mexico to fully concentrate on making an impact at the Grand Slam stage in New York.

For Eala, the tournament is more than just another stop in her busy schedule as it is a chance to prove herself against the sport’s elite and potentially secure her first-ever singles win in a women’s Grand Slam main draw.

The US Open kicks off on Aug. 24 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Her home base, the Rafa Nadal Academy, celebrated her entry into the tournament with a supportive post on social media along with other players.

“From Manacor to NY. The Rafa Nadal Academy players are heading to the @usopen to compete on one of the biggest stages in tennis. Your journey, built on effort, resilience and passion, continues in New York. Time to shine!” the academy shared.

This will also be Eala’s return to competition after a brief pause due to a shoulder injury. The injury sidelined her from both the Cincinnati and Montreal Opens, forcing her to carefully manage her recovery to avoid long-term setbacks. Her last official match was on July 28.

But Eala’s calendar will not end in New York. Immediately after the US Open, running from Aug. 25 to Sept. 7, she is expected to fly to Brazil to compete in the SP Open in São Paulo, scheduled from Sept. 8 to 14. The tournament is historic in its own right, marking the WTA’s return to Brazil after more than two decades.

As Eala heads into this new chapter, she carries with her the weight of Philippine hopes and the hunger for a breakthrough moment that could etch her name deeper into international tennis.
