In an unexpected development months after UAAP Season 87, Filipino Bulgarian forward Alex Konov has officially parted ways with De La Salle University, opting to return to his hometown in New Jersey to explore opportunities in US college basketball.
A 6-foot-7 sharpshooter, Konov was one of the most talked-about recruits for the Green Archers heading into the past season. His decision to leave the DLSU program comes barely a year after he committed to the squad, generating buzz for his shooting touch and international experience.
He confirmed, in an exclusive interview with Naveen Ganglani of All Star Magazine, that his departure is set for this week.

A former standout of the Gilas Pilipinas Boys squad, Konov had already proven his mettle on the international stage. During the 2022 FIBA U16 Asian Championship, he showcased his offensive versatility, putting up 10 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per outing.
Moreover, his senior season at Manasquan High School was just as solid, where he posted 11.13 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, further cementing his reputation as a reliable wing threat.
Originally expected to suit up for La Salle in Season 87, Konov was part of a highly touted recruiting class designed to bring the Green Archers back to the UAAP mountaintop.

However, whispers of over-recruitment and an already star-studded roster had fueled speculation around his future with the team. Now, with his departure confirmed, fans are left wondering what could have been.
Though he has not announced which American college he will commit to, Konov’s return to the United States keeps his basketball dreams alive.
While he may never don the green and white in an official UAAP game, the young forward’s next chapter promises to be just as intriguing as the one that brought him to Philippine shores.
