Filipino omelet ranks No. 2 among the world’s best egg dishes

 A Filipino egg dish clinches an “eggstraordinary” win. 

Tortang talong secures the No. 2 spot in the global food guide TasteAtlas’ list of world’s best egg dishes, outperforming New York’s iconic Eggs Benedict.

TasteAtlas based its February 2025 rankings on audience ratings while filtering out biased, bot-generated and nationalist votes.

The Filipino eggplant omelet, tortang talong, is a simple yet savory dish made by grilling or boiling whole eggplants, then dipping in beaten eggs and frying until crispy and golden brown.

While some prefer boiling to save time, grilling the eggplant gives it a distinct smoky flavor. This Filipino egg dish can also be customized with add-ons like meat. Packed with flavor, it is best enjoyed with steamed rice and banana ketchup on the side.

With a 4.4 out of 5 rating,  the dish not only secures the second spot as the best egg dish worldwide, but it also ranks as TasteAtlas’ top omelet variety, the best Filipino egg dish and No. 5 in overall Filipino dish.

Aside from being a top-tier egg dish, tortang talong is packed with protein and can be enjoyed by vegetarians, as the basic recipe without meat remains plant-based.

The latest rankings underscore the growing global presence of Filipino cuisine, with four more Filipino breakfast staples also landing on the top 100 list – chiksilog at No. 61, bangsilog at No. 66, daingsilog at No. 67 and tokneneng or kwek-kwek at No. 89.

Meanwhile, on the other end of spectrum, balut, a fertilized duck embryo famed for its bold flavors, has been named the third worst egg dish in the world.
