Taking a stand for cultural authenticity and Filipino representation in mainstream media, Filipino American actress Isa Briones successfully advocated for a significant change in HBO Max’s medical drama “The Pitt.”
She was able to alter her character’s last name to reflect her Filipino heritage. Best known for her role in “Star Trek: Picard,” Briones has always been vocal about embracing her multicultural roots.
When she noticed that her character’s surname did not align with her background, she saw an opportunity to introduce a touch of authenticity to the role.
Her request for the change was granted, marking a small but meaningful win for Filipino visibility on screen.

During a panel discussion, the actress emphasized the importance of this adjustment, stating that it “showcases the diversity that does exist in the medical field and is often not represented on TV.”

Her advocacy is parallel with the industry’s brewing recognition of the need for accurate and inclusive storytelling, especially in shows depicting professional spaces like healthcare.
Since its debut, “The Pitt” has resonated with audiences and critics alike, securing a spot among the Top 5 most-watched HBO Max original series premieres.
The show, which streams Thursdays on Crave in Canada, has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its Season 1 finale on April 10.
“The Pitt” features an ensemble cast, including Noah Wyle, Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez and Briones herself.
The series has earned praise for its realistic portrayal of emergency medicine.
Briones’ career began early—starting as a model in New York City at just three years old before transitioning to acting in 2008. She gained critical acclaim for her stage performances, winning an Ovation Award for Featured Actress in a Musical for Next to Normal in 2018.
