Jay R headlines Filipino American History Month celebration in Virginia
Filipino American History Month kicks off early in Portsmouth, Virginia, with Fil Fest USA at the helm of this annual cultural celebration. This year’s event will be headlined by “R&B King” Jay R.
Marking its 10th year with the theme, “Innovation & Technology,” Fil Fest USA pays tribute to the growing Fil-Am community in Coastal Virginia — with over 120,000 Filipinos calling it home.
Slated for October 5-6, this family-friendly and free event will start with a welcoming message from Mayor Shannon Glover, who will spotlight Filipino teachers serving Portsmouth public schools through the Global Teacher Program.
The mayor will also pay tribute to both retired and active Filipino members of the Coast Guard, in alignment with Portsmouth’s recent designation as a Coast Guard City.
Fil Fest USA took to Instagram to express their gratitude for the City’s proclamation of Filipino American History Month, writing, “We appreciate the support from the Mayor, City Council, Staff, and Team!”

Jay R will be joined on stage by several performers, including American pop band JAGMAC.
Fil Fest USA is also hosting its second annual “Flavors of the Philippines” — a culinary feast reminiscent of Restaurant Week, happening from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.
Fil Fest weekend would not be complete without the annual lumpia eating contest, sponsored by the local cult-fave Lumpia & Company.
Families with kids will enjoy a special interactive experience at the children’s tent, where they will see a custom LEGO Filipino jeepney set.
Designed to educate and inspire future generations about Filipino heritage, the LEGO jeepney set will be assembled by TikTok star and LittleBricks Charity CEO Russel Cassevah.
The partnership between LittleBricks Charity and Fil Fest USA highlights the importance of keeping cultural stories alive through innovative, hands-on learning.
The event will also feature a series of puppet shows featuring Laskin and Rudee Puppets.
Filipino American History Month will also honor Fil-Am innovation leaders who have made significant contributions in the fields of science, research & development, recruitment, health, business, music, dance and fashion.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Festival Park. For updates and more details, check out their website and social media accounts.
