Filipino arrested in Honolulu for attempted carjacking
A peaceful Sunday turned into a multi-car crash when a 32-year-old Filipino man allegedly attempted to hijack a car in Ala Moana in Honolulu.
Identified by the police officers as Travis Coloma, the suspect tried hijacking a car in broad daylight but the Honolulu police were quick to respond resulting in a road chase.
Coloma allegedly tried to flee the scene, which eventually caused a six-car crash approaching the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Ke’eaumoki Street.
The incident happened before 7 p.m. with Coloma trying to capture another vehicle to escape before the officers eventually apprehended him.
Police officers confirmed that Coloma has a record of several warrants and a history of road-related offenses that goes all the way back to 2010.
The female owner of the car he attempted to hijack during the chase provided a video of the incident. Although there were no fatalities, the incident brought concerns over repeat road offenders to the forefront.

The aftermath
Ala Moana Neighborhood Board Chair Kathleen Lee expressed her frustration over the carjacking in Honolulu.
“A good amount of these incidents with individuals that have repeated offenses, I bring up what happened with the intersection off of Kapiolani when we had our high school student who got killed by someone with repeated offenses,” she said.
Lee underscored the community’s support for fostering better regulations to ensure fewer similar incidents on the road.
Furthermore, this carjacking in Honolulu also highlighted the growing concern of car thefts in the area. According to Honolulu Crime Maps, several cases have been reported this week alone.
The first carjacking incident was in Waikiki — connecting two of Honolulu’s busiest districts in the same crime narrative.
