‘Lisa Frankenstein’ makes it to top 10 at box office this weekend
LOS ANGELES – ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ where Filipino American actress Liza Soberano plays a key supporting role, has made it to the top 10 domestic releases this weekend, taking in $2 million Friday through Sunday, according to industry estimates released today, Feb. 18.
Opening first place at the box office was “Bob Marley: One Love,” the biopic, which stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the Jamaican reggae legend, making $27.7 million. It easily beat out Sony and Marvel’s “Madame Web,” which grossed $15.1 million Friday through Sunday after some brutal reviews.
“Argylle” was third with $4.7 million in its third week at North American theaters, Comscore reported.
“Migration” was fourth with $3.7 million in its ninth week, followed by “The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 4-6,” a multi-season drama about the life of Jesus Christ, which made $3.44 million in its opening weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Wonka” ($3.4 million), “The Beekeeper” ($3.2 million), “Anyone But You” ($2.4 million), “Lisa Frankenstein” ($2 million) and “Land of Bad” ($1.8 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $76.5 million.
The year-to-date total is $764.1 million – down 15 percent from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
Rave reviews
Soberano has received rave reviews for her key supporting role in Diablo Cody’s and Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein.”
In her review, Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post wrote Soberano’s Taffy, “whose character delivers disarmingly sincere comeuppance to clichéd tropes of vapid beauty queens and mean-girl cheerleaders” might be the film’s brightest light.
“I feel very flattered. It was honestly a little unbelievable for me at first. I didn’t expect this many people to take a liking to my portrayal of Taffy in Lisa Frankenstein,” Soberano told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week.
“I didn’t expect much when the movie came out. So I’m just really happy and flattered, and I’m very inspired to act again soon.”
