A big night for ‘Barbie’ at People’s Choice Awards

SANTA MONICA – It could be a big night for “Barbie” tonight as the 2024 People’s Choice Awards are doled out at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, with the big-screen tale about a small-but-iconic doll leading all nominees.
“Barbie” has nine nominations heading into the event, with its fellow summer blockbuster “Oppenheimer” following closely with six. The films will vie for the top prize of movie of the year, competing with “Fast X,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,”“Taylor Swift The Eras Tour Film,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Super Mario Bros. Film.”
Margot Robbie is nominated for female movie star of the year for her lead role as Barbie, along with “Oppenheimer’s” Florence Pugh. Also competing for the prize are Halle Bailey for “The Little Mermaid,” Jenna Ortega for “Scream VI,” Jennifer Lawrence for “No Hard Feelings,” Julia Roberts of “Leave the World Behind” and Rachel Zegler and Viola Davis for “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.”
Ryan Gosling is up for male movie star of the year for his turn as Ken opposite Robbie’s Barbie. Cillian Murphy is also nominated for his lead role in “Oppenheimer.” Other nominees are Chris Pratt for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” Keanu Reeves for “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Leonardo DiCaprio of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Michael B. Jordan for “Creed III,” Timothée Chalamet for “Wonka” and Tom Cruise for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Among television programs, Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is the top nominee with seven, including a nod for comedy show of the year. Also competing for that honor are “Abbott Elementary,” “And Just Like That,” “Never Have I Ever,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Ted Lasso,” “The Bear” and “Young Sheldon.”
Nominated for best drama show of the year are “Chicago Fire,” “Ginny & Georgia,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Outer Banks,” “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The Morning Show.”
Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Luke Combs lead the nominees among musicians. The winners are decided solely by fan voting, differentiating the ceremony from Hollywood’s other honors that are generally voted upon by others in the industry.
“Barbie” co-star Simu Liu will host the event. During the show, Adam Sandler will receive the People’s Icon Award, while Lenny Kravitz will receive the Music Icon Award. Kylie Minogue and Lainey Wilson are expected to perform.
The ceremony will air at 8 p.m. on a delayed basis on NBC and be streamed live on Peacock and E! at 5 p.m.
