During the recent Miss Universe 2023, Philippines’ bet and top 10 finisher, Michelle Dee, wasn’t the sole flag-bearer on the international stage; renowned Filipino-American physician Connie Mariano was also present as one of the selection committee members.

Known for being the first female doctor at the White House, where she served former Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Barack Obama, and as the first Fil-Am to hold the rear admiral rank in the US Navy, Dr. Mariano is set to add a “Legacy Award” to her achievements.

“Her achievements inspire future generations for service in the medical field,” the statement continues, “Dr. Connie will share her valuable insights and experiences at CYFAM’s Conference, aiming to inspire the next generation of medical professionals and leaders.”

In addition to the awarding ceremony, the program will also include a research symposium, mentorship and networking opportunities to connect medical professionals and trainees, workshops centered on the growth and legacy of our community, an exhibitor showcase to highlight organizations and community resources, and cultural dance performances.

CYFAM is a national organization helping young Filipino American doctors and trainees. They work to develop leaders, support education and tackle health inequalities through advocacy and community partnerships.

The conference, taking place on Feb. 17-18 at the James West Alumni Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, will focus on the theme “Pamana sa Kinabukasan (Gift to the Future): The Filipinx Legacy as Seeds of the Future.”
