PH consulate to hold conference for Filipino int’l students in Canada
Amid the growing number of Filipino students pursuing education in Canada, the timing of the Filipino International Students Convention 2024 couldn’t be more opportune.
Based on estimates from Ottawa’s embassy in Manila, the number of Filipino students enrolled in academic institutions across Canada has now exceeded 30,000.
Additionally, 2022 data from IDP Philippines, a company offering counseling and support services for Filipino students studying abroad, reveals that approximately 49,000 scholars are currently pursuing their education overseas, with Canada ranking among their top choices.
This has given way for the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver to host its second annual conference for Filipino international students on Feb. 3, at the Creekside Community Center in False Creek.
Tailored to address the specific needs of Filipino international students in British Columbia, the event will delve into crucial topics such as settlement, employment, and integration.
Recognizing the aspiration of many students to stay in Canada post-education, the conference will also cover essential aspects like investments, credits, taxes, property ownership, renting rights, parent support, job market insights, and mentorship programs.
In collaboration with the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in BC, the conference aims to assist Filipino students in British Columbia in adapting seamlessly to student life in Canada.
Attendees can anticipate a comprehensive and informative program designed to equip them with the knowledge and resources necessary for success in their new environment.
This is not the first time the Philippine Consulate has organized an event like this. Last year, they launched their inaugural conference for Filipino migrant workers and international students with the theme “Resources Towards Enhancing Student Experience.”
The conference, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is free of charge, providing a valuable opportunity for Filipino students to enhance their understanding and preparation for life in Canada.
