A first in Canada, British Columbia now has Int’l Migrants Day
In a historic milestone for Canada, British Columbia (BC) has officially designated Dec. 18 as International Migrants Day, making it the pioneering province to proclaim such recognition.
The proclamation is a tribute to the contributions of migrant workers to the provincial economy. It specifically acknowledges the resilience of thousands of migrants who, despite confronting precarious and vulnerable conditions, have steadfastly contributed to the prosperity, innovation, and sustainable development of BC.
At the forefront of this recognition is Migrante BC, a Filipino grassroots organization passionately dedicated to championing migrants’ rights and dignity. Their advocacy played a pivotal role in initiating the proclamation, marking a significant stride forward in acknowledging the myriad challenges and triumphs experienced by migrants.
On Facebook, they posted a statement saying, “As 2023 draws to a close, on this International Migrants Day, we renew our commitment to fight for migrants’ rights and for a homeland where the people will not be forced to migrate,” and went on to shed light on the issues faced by migrants.
Highlighting the challenges faced by migrants in Canada, including temporary or uncertain immigration status and limited access to essential services, the proclamation sheds light on the multifaceted issues this community encounters.
“As Migrante Canada, we must continue to build on the successes we have achieved this year. We must carry forward the collective learnings from the Migrante International’s 9th Congress and implement our unified program of action,” the group added.
According to the declaration, International Migrants Day provides an opportune moment to celebrate the outstanding contributions of migrants in the province and globally, while simultaneously raising awareness about the perilous journeys undertaken by millions each year.
The document underscores the resilience of migrant communities, recognizing their pivotal role in fostering prosperity and development in host countries, as well as countries of origin and transit.

The significance of Dec. 18 aligns with the day in 1990 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. This historic date serves as a reminder of the global commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of migrant communities.
In this proclamation, BC not only sets a precedent for other provinces but also sends a powerful message of gratitude and acknowledgment to the migrants whose contributions have shaped the province’s diverse and resilient communities.
