It looks like that prodigy’s “The Voice” journey has come to an end.

After a series of outstanding performances (including an Aretha Franklin cover), Kaylee Shimizu—who recently turned 18—delivered another powerhouse performance during the Playoffs round of the 24th season of NBC’s “The Voice.”

In a dazzling butterfly-themed ensemble, the Filipino-American artist from Hawaii gave her take on the soulful ’90s track “You Put a Move On My Heart,” originally by veteran producer Quincy Jones featuring Tamia. She was able to showcase her vocal prowess yet again—even letting out a whistle in the last few seconds as a finishing touch.

The judges were evidently in awe post-performance, with her own coach John Legend giving a standing ovation and mouthing, “beautiful.” In his feedback, the coach remarked, “The fact that you can do that and then go to those notes in the stratosphere that almost no one on the planet can hit, you’re ready for this. You are ready to be a big star. You’re so special, Kaylee.”

However, when it went down to naming the hopefuls to advance to the next stage a.k.a. the Live Shows, Shimizu failed to get chosen by Legend. The four-chair turner got eliminated along with Taylor Deneen and Kristen Brown, while Lila Forde, Azán, and Mac Royals will be the ones moving forward from the team.

In her time in “The Voice,” Shimizu was often commended for her unbelievable talent at a young age, both by the judges and general public. After her blind audition, Legend even said, “You know you could win ‘The Voice,’ right?”

Because of what seems to be a consensus of everyone believing that Shimizu deserves to go far in the competition, it didn’t take long for the show’s viewers to flock to the comment section of her videos and express their disappointment over her coach’s decision.

Even her latest Instagram post wasn’t spared from people’s sentiments—some claim that they only watch “The Voice” because of her, while others have even tagged Legend for an “explanation” behind his decision.

Despite failing to secure a slot, many are confident that this is just the beginning of the young artist’s journey. With a performance portfolio like that, who wouldn’t pay attention to Shimizu’s next (figurative and literal) stage?
