SoCal's top Filipino chefs unite for a cause-driven ‘kamayan dinner’

San Diego and Los Angeles, both distinguished for their vibrant Filipino communities, are uniting for a cause-driven culinary celebration.

In honor of Filipino American History Month, chef Tara Monsod of San Diego’s Animae will host a special kamayan dinner with top Filipino chefs in Los Angeles.

The kamayan dinner, a traditional Filipino feast known for its communal-style dining, on Oct. 26, will feature an impressive lineup of SoCal Filipino chefs.

Among them are Philip Esteban, the owner and chef behind San Diego’s White Rice, Nico de Leon of Lasita, recently recognized as one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles by The New York Times, Johneric Concordia of The Park’s Finest, celebrated for his innovative approach to Filipino cuisine, and pastry chef Rice Dulguime-Thunyakij of the two Michelin-starred N/naka.

A philanthropic endeavor

The event also aims to benefit the Karangalan Scholarship, making it more than just a gathering of culinary talent.

The Karangalan Scholarship, funded by a network of Filipino educators from the Sweetwater Union High School District, recognizes exceptional senior Filipino-American students within the district who have showcased remarkable academic achievements and active community participation.

Over the past two decades, the Karangalan Scholarship has granted more than $100,000 in scholarships.

These chefs are more than just culinary artists as they are visionaries who utilize food as a means to unite diverse populations and elevate Filipino cuisine on a global stage. Their commonality in using their culinary talents for a shared mission makes this event particularly meaningful.

The event is scheduled at Animae, 969 Pacific Hwy, San Diego, CA 92101 for $150 per guest.
