Pasadena, California — For the first time on Oct. 7, UCLA Football Athletics held a Pilipino Heritage Game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in recognition of Filipino American History Month.

The football game was between UCLA and Washington State, with UCLA winning 25 to 17.

“We’re excited that UCLA Athletics/Football has opened up their Pilipino Heritage Game for fundraising opportunities for nonprofit organizations such as the Philippine Independence Day Foundation (PIDF) and the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO),” said Frederick Alain Docdocil, PIDF president and Mabuhay Branch and Business Development coordinator.

UCLA offered a special package that included both the UCLA x Pilipino Heritage T-shirt and a ticket to the game against Washington State. Each package sold through the organization’s promotional link raised $8.

“UCLA is very open to receive and continue events planning and resources sharing with PIDF,” said Richard Bis, former PIDF member and UCLA alumni. “I was part of the UCLA Samahang Pilipino leadership who worked with the UCLA Student Government to start recognizing Filipino Heritage, Pilipino American History Month, and Pilipino contributions in UCLA.”

“In addition to the opportunity to fundraise for our organization, this is an awesome opportunity to celebrate Filipino American History Month at the Rose Bowl,” Docdocil said.

The Rose Bowl Stadium is well-known for hosting the annual Rose Bowl Game, five Super Bowls, a few Summer Olympics events, and a few FIFA World Cup Finals.

“Because of the diversity in Carson and the neighboring areas, I believe that the PIDF strives to inform the community about Filipino heritage,” Bis added. “The PIDF’s mission and goals overall is to serve the Filipino American community.”

According to the PIDF, it’s always looking for volunteers and performers to help contribute to the goal of preserving Philippine heritage and culture, particularly as it relates to the annual celebration of Philippine Independence Day in June.

Prior to the game, PIDF and FYLPRO celebrated with the UCLA Pilipino Alumni Association Tailgate, which was held directly outside the Rose Bowl.

“I hope the students that attend the game become aware and understand the relevance and leadership of the Filipino community,” Bis said. “They develop relationships with the PIDF and other Filipino organizations. They enjoy the rich tradition and history of the Filipino people,” Bis added.

“Happy Filipino American History Month! Let’s all show off our bayanihan spirit and support our local Filipino/Fil-Am community!” Docdocil said.
