How many pieces of lumpia can you eat in 10 mins to win $1,000?
Filipino American History Month was first celebrated in the United States in October 1992 before the US Congress formally declared it in 2009. And what better way to celebrate than with tons of Filipino food at the largest Filipino Street Fair on the East Coast with over 50 Filipino small businesses?
This weekend, a two-day festivity will be held in New York celebrating two Pinoy culinary icons: the calamansi and lumpia.

This year’s event hosted by Philippines Fest—the first Filipino street food fair originating in New York City—is taking place at 4th Ave. between 12th and 13th Sts.
A food fest and beyond
While it is a celebration of everything Filipino (through food nonetheless) there are also a bunch of other activities lined up for Oct. 7 and 8. These include two friendly competitions: a karaoke singing contest and a lumpia eating contest, because Filipinos are known as great singers, and well, what’s not to love about lumpia?
And if you need more reasons to join, the winner of the lumpia eating contest brings home a whopping $1,000(!).
Last year’s winner, Wayne Algenio, ate 69 pieces of lumpia in 10 minutes.
He beat the record for the most number of lumpia devoured in 10 minutes, which was previously held by a man from Texas, who ate 52 pieces of these beloved fried spring rolls.

In a YouTube vlog, Algenio shared a behind-the-scenes look at last year’s competition, including a preview of just how big each lumpia is: about six inches long and more than an inch thick. It was not his first time joining and will definitely not be the last as he will be at the Philippines Lumpia Fest to defend his title.
Do you think you can beat his record?
