New Study Shows ChatGPT Could Displace 4.8 Million Workers in the US
According to recent studies, artificial intelligence could potentially displace millions of jobs in the United States and worldwide. ChatGPT, a generative AI tool developed by OpenAI, has acknowledged this fact, recognizing that the technology could threaten workers’ livelihoods.
In a recent interview, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a global outplacement and executive coaching firm, asked ChatGPT how many workers it could replace. The answer was concerning—4.8 million American jobs.
Andrew Challenger, the senior vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said that artificial intelligence “should be viewed as a tool to support workers and not as a replacement for their roles.”
Challenger asserted that predictive language models could help automate tasks. Most importantly, these tools give workers “more time to focus on those involving higher thinking,” he adds.
ChatGPT is expected to replace 4.5 million U.S. jobs.

His words will do little to dispel concerns among policymakers and also employees about the potential for chatbots and large language models (LLMs) to displace workers.
What Jobs Could ChatGPT Replace
Companies currently widely use ChatGPT to support workers in various industries, assisting them in tasks requiring human judgment. It is best to take over repetitive and predictable language-centered roles.
LLMs like ChatGPT could one day replace workers. Some of these include customer service representatives, technical writers, translators and interpreters, copywriters, and data entry clerks.

It is worth noting that historically, technological advancements have often created more job opportunities than they have eliminated.
Similarly, the development of tools like ChatGPT has the potential to create new jobs. It was evident in the emergence of prompt engineering. Moreover, AI, healthcare, and legal companies have hired prompt engineers to train LLMs to provide more accurate and personalized input responses.
