American Idol has always been a platform for aspiring singers to showcase their talents. However, the show has been in the news lately for the wrong reasons.

One of the judges, Katy Perry, recently made some remarks that were deemed as ‘mum shaming’ by one of the contestants.

Sara Beth Liebe, a participant in “American Idol,” expressed that she found Judge Katy Perry’s response upon discovering that she is a young mother to be both “hurtful” and “embarrassing.”

During the Audition

In her audition for “American Idol,” broadcast in early March, the judges, including Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie, expressed amazement at the youthful appearance of the Californian mother of three.

Katy Perry exclaimed, “What?!” as she stood up abruptly from her seat and walked away, while Bryan asked if Katy was alright. Katy Perry, a mother to a 2-year-old daughter named Daisy with Orlando Bloom, responded negatively.

Liebe then commented that she might faint if Katy lay on the table again, to which Katy Perry retorted that Liebe had been lying too much.

Liebe later shared in a TikTok video that she was embarrassed and hurt by Katy Perry’s comment on TV.

She expressed her belief in the importance of women supporting and uplifting other women and condemned mom shaming.

While Katy’s comment may have been well-intentioned, it did not sit well with Liebe. She felt that the judge was ‘mum shaming’ her for pursuing her dreams while being a mother.

In an emotional interview after the audition, Liebe commented. “I’m a new mom, and I don’t have much time to practice. And so, I’m putting everything on the line when I’m here.”

“And to hear that, it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re a mom, so you must be sacrificing everything.’ It’s like, no, I’m not sacrificing everything. I’m doing what I love.”

No to ‘Mum Shaming’

Liebe’s response to Katy’s comment was commendable. It sparked a conversation about the pressures that working mothers face in society. Being a mum is a full-time job, and pursuing a career can be incredibly challenging.

However, it is not impossible, and mothers should not be shamed for wanting to pursue their passions and dreams.

Viewers urged Katy Perry to offer an apology to numerous social media users. On Katy Perry’s Instagram account, one of them wrote, “Your conduct during her audition was terrible, particularly considering that you are a mother yourself.”

Another follower wrote, “As a 27-year-old mother of three, we face sufficient challenges! Individuals who radiate such energy bring unnecessary negativity.”

On TikTok, users labeled Katy Perry as “rude” and a “bully” and advised her to “improve.”

The incident between Liebe and Katy may have been a misunderstanding. But it highlighted the importance of supporting working mothers and not judging them for their choices.
