It would probably seem strange to see Joe Rogan start a comedy show if you only know him from the JRE Podcast.
Yet, the Elk meat man said he “felt compelled to do it” while on Theo Von’s podcast. Rogan continued, “I never wanted to own a comedy club….”
“I always felt like you just had to be nice to comedy club owners because you never want to be one of those people….”
“But then when I knew I was moving here, and [Austin’s Capital City Comedy Club] was already closed….”
“I was like, ‘Maybe I should buy a [expletive] club, and start a club.’ And that became my focus,” the JRE Podcast host said.
Also, the podcaster wanted to improve the reputation of the Sixth Street entertainment district where Comedy Mothership stands.
It was notorious for being a “no-go” for many locals amid endless squabbles over police funding and staffing between the Austin police department union and the city council.
The Comedy Mothership name came from this goal. It compares the troubled area to some sort of alien world, and the Mothership is there to improve or “terraform” it.
What’s it like in Comedy Mothership?
Its website says “Hecklers Will Be Alienated,” referring to potential haters who may petition to cancel its comedy artists.
Hence, the venue has tighter security than other comedy clubs. It requires attendees to get their faces scanned at the entrance, similar to airport boarding procedures.
Then, the audience must secure their mobile devices in pouches to prevent anyone from leaking the live shows.
The cast consists of Joe Rogan’s frifunny personalities who do not shy away from covering controversial topics.
Roseanne Barr is one of the members, and she aired her frustration on cancel culture. “After 30 years of fighting ABC to have black writers and black characters on my show…
“…and then having the same [expletive] libtards turn around and call me a racist, it really [expletive] pissing me off,” she said
Barr concluded her rant with a message for Rogan, “I want to thank Joe for building this wonderful Mothership for comedians.”
