Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is a Canadian singer and songwriter who earned three Grammy Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards, and many others.
Yet, he has been steadily building his showbiz career. For example, he starred in the 2018 film Uncut Gems.
His most recent project is The Idol, a drama series he first announced on June 29, 2021. He is the executive producer and co-writer.
Principal photography for the show occurred in Los Angeles, California. However, the crew had to temporarily suspend production in April 2022.
The Weeknd was co-headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the time. Fortunately, HBO released a trailer on July 2022, confirming its upcoming launch.
More importantly, it featured Jenny Kim, a member of the K-Pop group Blackpink, dancing in the background.
Kim will debut in the upcoming HBO film, but we have no information about her role. Fortunately, she assured audiences that it is a must-watch.
“I found the script very intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the series,” Kim told the Korean news outlet Yonhap.
“I feel very excited. I’ll work hard, so please watch me with affection,” she added. The Idol follows a rising pop artist played by Lily Rose-Depp.
She gets entangled in a complex relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader, starred by The Weeknd.
The series revolves around the cutthroat music industry in Hollywood. Moreover, the trailer calls the new original series “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”
Aside from Kim and Tesfaye, it will feature other artists like Debbie Ryan, Hari Nef, Rachel Sennott, Nico Hiraga, Elizabeth Berkley, Troye Sivan, and Tyson Ritter.
Like The Weeknd’s first film starring himself, The Idol does not have an exact premiere date yet.
