Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala’s steady ascent in global tennis continues as she entered the Guadalajara Open already making strides in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) live rankings.
From her previous position of No. 75, Eala has now jumped five places to sit at No. 70, which is another career milestone for the 20-year-old.

Her rankings boost came just before she opened her campaign in Mexico, where she swept past the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory on Wednesday morning (Philippine time).
The surge in Eala’s rankings is the latest chapter in what has been a historic year. During the US Open, she made headlines as the first Filipina to win a Grand Slam main draw singles match, defeating world No. 14 Clara Tauson in the opening round.

That stunning win further catapulted her to a career-high No. 66 in the live rankings, showcasing just how quickly she is breaking barriers for Philippine tennis, first-ever for a Filipina tennis player to reach this high.
Eala has remained grounded despite her success, reflecting on her US Open journey with gratitude and resolve.
“US Open ‘25, what an experience! I’ve never in my life felt so loved on a tennis court, and for that, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I wished I could’ve gone deeper this week, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’ll be back stronger, but for now, it’s back to work! Salamat, New York,” she shared.
With her rise into the Top 70, Eala is edging closer to becoming a regular fixture in major tournaments and deep runs at WTA events.
