Young Fil-Am in Hawaii sentenced to life in prison for fatal stabbing

A young Filipino American who was convicted of stabbing to death a 19-year-old visitor from California in Waikiki, Hawaii last year was sentenced Tuesday, Dec. 13  to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Oscar Cardona, now 23, fatally stabbed 19-year-old Elian Delacerda on June 1, 2021, during a fight between two groups of young people.

Cardona came to the aid of a roommate and his group who had a confrontation with another group of young people at Kuhio Beach Park. Cardona took a knife and bicycled to the scene where Delacerda was fatally stabbed.

After Cardona’s murder conviction, he pleaded no contest to charges for possession of cocaine and cannabis at the time of the stabbing.

He was sentenced to five years for the drug charge, to run simultaneously with the life term. Cardona was ordered to pay $14,916 restitution to Juan Delacerda, the victim’s father and $4,000 to the Crime Victim Compensation Commission.
