Visiting journalists from PH attacked with slurs in New York
A group of Filipino journalists visiting New York City were allegedly attacked verbally with racist slurs three times in a single day, as they viewed city sights.
Elmer Cato, the Consul General of the Philippines in New York, reported the incidents on Twitter on Thursday:
“A few days after interviewing Filipino hate crime victims, a group of visiting journalists from Manila experienced anti-Asian hate themselves not just once but three times on Thursday.”
Bernadette E. Tamayo of The Manila Times said that in the first incident a woman hurled racial slurs at their group while they were in a subway station. “Go to hell! You f*cking monkeys!” the woman allegedly yelled.
A few hours later, a man selling souvenir items reported shouted “Corona!” at Tamayo’s colleagues as walked on the Brooklyn Bridge.
Then, as the group walked to the 9/11 Memorial, a man allegedly yelled “F*ck you!” at them.
