Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine with Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool 3’

Hugh Jackman is back and will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool 3.’ The movie’s third installment will hit the theaters on Sept. 26, 2024.

While Disney confirmed that Deadpool would enter the MCU, it was uncertain when the character would have a standalone film. It’s also unclear where it would perfectly fit into the vast stretch of the Multiverse.

In 2019, Deadpool was one of the comic book properties that Disney bought together with its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. The Fantastic Four and X-Men are also set to integrate into the cinemas in the next few years.

During the D23 Disney Expo, Ryan Reynolds said in a video, “Hey everyone, we’re unfortunate to have missed D23. But we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool film for a while now. I’ve had to search my soul in this one. His first appearance in the MCU needs to feel special. We must stay true to the character and find new depth, motivation, and meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach deep inside. And I, I have nothing. Yeah, just empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have no idea.”

At this instance of the video clip, Ryan Reynolds asked Hugh Jackman, who walked by the background. “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Hugh answered, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”

The video ended while singer Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” played. The song has a subtitle of “I will always love Hugh.” Then, a “Coming Hugh” teaser played after. Following that is the Deadpool logo appearance that Wolverine’s claws sliced after.

Moreover, the director of ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Adam Project’ Shawn Levy, will be directing Deadpool 3. Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who wrote the first two Deadpool films, will also return to write Deadpool 3. Reese has confirmed that ‘Deadpool 3’ will remain R-rated even with MCU’s family-friendly themes.

Deadpool’s first two franchises were rated R and earned $780 million each worldwide. This might be why Disney also agreed for Deadpool 3 to be rated R considering the rest of the MCU family is rated PG-13 or lower.

Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman’s comeback will surely be a hit. The last time fans saw Jackman play Wolverine was in 2016 in the movie ‘Logan.’ He died at the end of the movie. Also, Jackman has repeatedly cited that the film was his swan song in the role.

Hence, fans and MCU followers wonder how Wolverine will appear in Deadpool 3. However, the character is famous for constantly breaking the fourth wall both in the comics and the film. In addition, in a Variety interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said, “Anything’s possible in the multiverse.”

It’s also safe to say that the duo of Jackman and Reynolds will have positive results. As the two already have a long superhero history together. Reynolds first joined Jackman as a character in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The Deadpool character that Reynolds played in that X-Men movie was his character version with the mouth sewn shut. He’s also not wearing the iconic black and red costume. After a few years, Reynolds also plays the assassin in the Deadpool movie.
