Beloved PH-born surgeon passes away at 85 in Missouri
Dr. Laureano “Larry” Mayuga, 85, a highly respected surgeon in Cabool, Missouri, passed away Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, in St. Louis. He practiced medicine from 1973 until he retired in 2002, operating the Mayuga Clinic in Cabool.
Dr. Mayuga was chief of surgery at Texas County Memorial Hospital at Houston, Missouri for many years. He and his wife, Cres, were prominent in the Cabool community, and were active fundraisers for Hospice of Care, a unit of Texas County Memorial Hospital. A hospital cafeteria, the Mayuga Café, is named in his honor for his big impact in providing health care in the county.
His arrival in the county (along with that of another doctor) “significantly increased the number of surgeries performed at the county hospital, which added two new operating rooms and a three-bed recovery area,” according to the Houston Herald.
Several people praised Dr. Mayuga wrote on his Legacy.com obituary, among them:
“He was the very best!!! Such a great Dr and kind man. He cared so much for his patients and their families. We were blessed to have been patients of his in Texas county Mo. Prayers for all the family,” Linda and Darrell Vandivort.
“Sorry for your loss. Dr Mayuga gave so much of himself, his talents, skills, and always blessed us with his smile. What a beautiful memory!,” Lu Adams.
Dr. Mayuga came to the United States in 1965 after finishing medical school in the Philippines. He completed his residency in surgery at St. Louis County Hospital. He is survived by Cres Mayuga and their four children.
Services for Dr. Mayuga are 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Imperial. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, Ballwin.
