Self-taught artist ex-postal worker holds solo show in California
A former U.S. Air Force serviceman and retired postal worker is holding a solo exhibition of his paintings in Elk Grove, California.
Victor L. Bicomong, a self-taught painter, works in a variety of styles, from still life to abstract to portraits. Hence, his solo exhibit is titled “The Eclectic Artist.” It is at the Foyer Gallery in the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center at 9683 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove, California, through Sept. 22.
Bicomong’s rendition of a crowded Filipino bus won first place in the art show at the Elk Grove Multicultural Festival last Aug. 27, according to the Elk Grove Citizen.
After immigrating from the Philippines in 1978, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged as a sergeant. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years, becoming a supervisor before retiring.
In the 1980s he was commissioned to paint a mural in the break room of his Vallejo post office workplace. He painted San Francisco Bay Area landmarks like the Bay Bridge, his co-workers, celebrities like comedian Bill Cosby and fashion model Cindy Crawford. “As an inside joke, he painted a portrait of a dog that bit one of his co-workers, twice,” the Citizen’s Cameron Macdonald.
