Bonta wins Democratic primary for California attorney general
OAKLAND, California – Filipino American Rob Bonta won the recent Democratic Party primary becoming the party’s candidate for California State Attorney General in the coming November. Bonta received 1,853,649 or 54.4% of primary votes, according to unofficial partial results end of June 8.
The grateful Bonta thanked Californians for resoundingly supporting his campaign, saying he was “humbled and deeply honored by this vote of confidence and the resounding message delivered by California voters.”
“As Attorney General, I wake up every day and go to work to protect public safety and defend Californians’ rights. Under my watch, the Department of Justice has taken thousands of illegal guns off the streets, cracked down on transnational criminal organizations and launched new investigation teams to fight child sex traffickers,” enumerated Bonta of his achievements.
Bonta also pointed out that, under his watch, he has done more to stand up to rightwing attacks on constitutional and legal rights — from defending abortion protections and the right to privacy to strengthening gun safety laws.
As it stands Bonta will face either Nathan Hochman (who has 18.5%) or Eric Early (currently with 16.9%) as the Republican candidate who will advance to the General Election
Both Republicans have dodged basic questions about how they would handle the earlier cited constitutional and legal issues if elected Attorney General.
“With the Supreme Court on the verge of invalidating Roe and potentially overturning gun safety laws, there is far too much at stake. Californians won’t be fooled — they know Eric Early and Nathan Hochman stand with Trump and against our California values,” a confident Bonta insists.
Bonta was appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on April 23, 2021 as the 34th State Attorney General to serve the remaining term of Xavier Becerra who has been chosen by President Biden to be his Department of Health and Human Services secretary.
Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Bpnta came to California with his family as an infant. He learned activism early in life from his parents, Warren and Cynthia, who organized with the United Farm Workers and were active the civil rights movement. He worked his way through college and graduated with honors from Yale University and attended Yale Law School.
Bonta is married to Mia Bonta, who is also on the ballot in the general election on November 8, 2022 after advancing from the recent primary as to become a re-electionist candidate for California’s 18th District Assemblymember the position left by her husband, Rob. They are the proud parents of three children Reina, Iliana and Andres.
