5 tips for eco-tourists

Tips for Eco Tourists_Coron

The popularity of Eco-tourism in recent years, both in the Philippines and across the globe, has helped a lot in spreading awareness about the rising problems and preservation methods of Mother Nature.

Sadly, many undisciplined tourists and unorganized activities do much more harm than good. The harm can be lessened, if not totally eliminated though. With the natural disasters becoming more frequent nowadays, taking care of our earth and everything in it is important.

If you are planning on going on a nature trip, here are five (5) things to remember:

Research. Visit tourist destinations which are protected. Not only will you enjoy the benefits of being one with nature, but this will also generate profits for the site’s preservation projects. There are a lot of remarkable tourist spots that can be found in the Philippines including the world-renowned Subterranean River in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.  Go online and check on the internet or ask your friends to get details about your ideal travel destination; know as much as you can. This will keep you informed of what you can and cannot do once you are on the actual trip.

Travel Light. When traveling, always remember to bring only the essential things you will need. Apart from saving baggage space, this will help you become more focused on enjoying your trip. Refrain from carrying unrecyclable items. Limit the packaging you bring with you, instead of using plastics, resort to using nonwoven or eco-friendly bags. This will not only help minimize waste; it also provides more room for presents too.

Do not litter. You probably heard the saying, “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.” This is especially true if you are on a nature trip. Make sure you clean up as you go. Bring a trash bag with you on your travel. You may also go one step ahead and pick up others’ trash along the way.

Do not feed the wildlife. Though tourist spots allow the feeding of animals, doing so must be avoided most especially in areas with wild animals. Wild animals are born to hunt and eat their food fresh; feeding makes them dependent, causing them to think humans as sources of food.

Respect all living things.  One significant thing that tourists need to know about nature and wildlife is that a simple mistake may cause permanent damage to everyone, animal or human. Whether you are on a nature trail or wading through any body of water, always watch your step.

Remember these simple yet meaningful steps in ecological conservation. Alone, these small acts might not make much impact, but together we can definitely make the world a better place.
