Soft skills are personality traits that help you carry out your professional duties seamlessly and interact efficiently with others. Soft skills can’t be taught in a classroom, but they can be worked on individually to make yourself more valuable to employers or help start your own journey as an entrepreneur. Communication

Everyone can communicate on some level, but learning how to do it effectively can make the difference. Communication skills can be both verbal and written, and include things like presentation skills, active listening, non-verbal communication, constructive feedback, and friendliness. “Endearing yourself to people and getting your message across clearly is an incredibly valuable skill,” said Koko Petkov. “If people don’t understand what you’re trying to convey, you’re much less likely to land a new client or get a new job.”

Teamwork

Working together with others on group projects is one of the most essential soft skills for professionals. “Whether you want to participate in a team or create your own, you need to know how to divide work, do your part on time, and brainstorm,” said Petkov. “You’ll be working with other people every day, so there’s no time like the present to work on this soft skill.”

Problem Solving

You’ll always run into issues when you’re creating a new product or trying something new. According to Koko Petkov, “An expert problem solver looks at things differently than anyone else. They are amazing to have around and invaluable in any team.” You can work on this skill by brainstorming ideas and thinking outside the box.

Reliability

If you want to get a job or keep one, you need to be a reliable person. “Your boss and team members should know that you’ll show up when you say so and complete your assignments on time. Unfortunately, many young people are a little flaky, making them show up late to meetings or arrive unprepared,” explained Petkov. Set your alarm a little earlier to make sure you’re always on time.

Creativity

There are lots of ways to be creative in the workplace, and all of them can bring a great deal of value. This skill is often undervalued, but without creative thinking, your business won’t stand out. This can include imagination, divergent thinking, innovation, insight, and design. “If you’re a creative person, consider creating your own brand in case you have a great idea. It’s hard to teach creativity, and people who are intrinsically creative can get a lot done,” said Koko Petkov.

While it may not always seem like it, soft skills can be just as critical as hard ones in a professional environment. Koko Petkov recommends putting them on your resume and always talking about them in the interview so you can stand out.
