Facebook Messenger has new screenshot feature like Snapchat
Meta launched a new Facebook Messenger feature that will allow users to be notified when someone took a screenshot on the end-to-end encrypted chats. Whether this Snapchat-style feature will give users more security or a more invasion of their privacy, here’s what you need to know.
For nearly a decade, Facebook messenger users have had the option to choose between all functions set up on chat and having an end-to-end encryption type of chats. However, that is not the case anymore.

Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that messenger has now additional features for end-to-end encrypted chats. Zuckerberg said in an , “New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message. We’re also adding GIFs, reactions, and stickers to encrypted chats too.”
By default, Facebook Messenger is not end-to-end encrypted chats. If users want to use this feature, it has to be set up on their messengers. To utilize this new feature, users just have to hit the lock icon or choose the secure chat.
Once this is done, the Facebook messenger will now inform the users whenever screenshots are taken on the Secret Conversations (end-to-end encrypted chats). Users can now make end-to-end group calls and chats.
In addition, they also now can forward messages to other conversations and swipe to reply to messages while they’re in the Secret Conversations. Users are also capable of saving images and videos in their Secret Conversions just by long-pressing the contents
Another added feature is that users can just long-press when replying or forwarding messages. Zuckerberg also mentioned that “encrypted chats also now support verified badges so that people can identify authentic accounts.”
While these features were already existing on Vanish mode, they will also now be available to the Secret Conversations. Where disappearing messages are also part of the new rollout.
While Meta is gradually updating its Facebook Messenger features, it’s all part of the company’s future plan. Their goal is to fully switch to end-to-end encryption by default. Meta has been planning to launch all the new features early this year. However, the company previously announced before that it would be delayed until 2023. Though some of the new features have rolled out this month.
Zuckerberg added, “We’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global rollout of end-to-end encryption by default across all our messaging services until sometime in 2023.”
Facebook Messenger has been missing some features that non-end-to-end encrypted chats have for years. They’re now adding in those missing features to the encrypted chats.
