DiGiorno recalls over 27,000 pounds of pizza due to allergy concerns

/ 10:49 AM September 28, 2021

Nestle USA, Inc. issued a recall notice for their popular DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust pepperoni pizza. The brand recall was due to “misbranding and undeclared allergens”.

While the almost 28,000 pounds of pizza comes with the label DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust pepperoni Pizza, what’s inside the boxes is DiGiorno’s Three Meat Crispy Pan Crust Pizza. This is according to the recall notice from Nestle.

According to the recall notice, “People who are allergic to soy could have an allergic reaction and should not consume the product.”

These DiGiorno pizzas contain “textured soy protein, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.” the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

Although the DiGiorno boxes were already out nationwide, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced its recall notice.

With a lot code 1181510721 and “Best Buy” date of MAR2022, the controversial pizzas’ production date is on June 30, 2021. They are in 26-ounce cartons with an establishment number “EST.1682A” inside the USDA inspection mark.

However, there’s no recall for the DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizza with different production dates.

Nestle said they received a customer complaint that there was a mistake within the contents of the pizza boxes. With a label of pepperoni pizza, the box contains a three-meat flavor instead. Moreover, there are no reports of allergic reactions or illnesses from eating the pizza.

Nestle is currently urging customers not to consume them. The company said. “This product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. For consumers not allergic to soy, there is no safety issue with this product.”

Although the USDA categorized the announcement as just a “Class I” recall, they said it’s still “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
